Robert E. Cornegy, Jr. has represented Bedford Stuyvesant and northern Crown Heights in the New York City Council since 2014. He Chairs the Council’s Committee on Housing and Buildings, Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprise (M/WBE) Task Force, the Council’s Democratic Conference, and is a member of the influential Budget Negotiating Team (BNT). He is also an active member of the Committees on Economic Development; Education; Finance; State and Federal Legislation; and Rules, Privileges, and Elections. Council Member Cornegy has demonstrated his leadership through legislative action, community outreach and partnerships, and other notable initiatives. He has introduced fifteen bills passed into law including Avonte’s Law, a bill designed to improve school safety by increasing the number of audible alarms on public school doors and the Kalief Browder Bill, mandating that the Department of Corrections provide educational and vocational training, as well as therapy and other necessary services to people detained on Rikers Island. As the former Chair of Small Business, he was instrumental in launching the mobile business support unit known as Chamber On the Go, which serves thousands of small businesses in all five boroughs every year. As Housing Chair, Council Member Cornegy routinely advocates for fair housing practices, supportive and senior housing development, and works to hold developers and landlords accountable to the New Yorkers they serve.
